KRSTE GOSPODINOVSKI
OBOJENA KLAPA - DIRECTOR/VISUAL ARTIST
Krste Gospodinovski (b. 1984) is a Macedonian animation director, visual artist, and professor whose work spans animated film, visual effects, and interdisciplinary audiovisual projects. His artistic practice is rooted in a strong visual arts background, combining painterly sensibility with contemporary animation techniques to explore psychological and philosophical themes.
He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Painting at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, under the mentorship of Prof. Andrey Daniel and Assoc. Prof. Pravdolyub Ivanov. In 2018, he began doctoral studies at the Institute of Macedonian Literature, further deepening his research into visual language and narrative.
Since 2009, Gospodinovski has been a central figure in animation education in North Macedonia. He has been teaching at the University of Audiovisual Arts – ESRA, where he served as Head of the Animation Department and taught a wide range of subjects including animation, character design, storyboarding, compositing, and digital image processing. He later held teaching positions at Goce Delchev University in Shtip and is currently a full professor at the University of Audiovisual Arts – Europa Prima, as well as a visiting professor at the International Balkan University in Skopje. His pedagogical work has significantly contributed to the development of a new generation of animation filmmakers in the region.
In 2011, he founded the production company “Uzengija,” and co-founded Flip Book Productions, through which he has developed numerous film and animation projects. In 2020, he co-founded the Flipbook Film Festival, dedicated to European auteur animated film, further supporting the growth of independent animation culture.
Gospodinovski has worked extensively across animation, compositing, and visual effects for both short and feature films, as well as commercial and theatrical projects. His collaborations include work on internationally co-produced feature films and projects across Europe. He has contributed as an animator, VFX artist, compositing artist, and animation director on a wide range of productions, including feature films such as Children of the Sun, The Woman of My Life, When the Trees Fall, Mockery of Christ, and Lena and Vladimir for which he won an award for best VFX.
Alongside his collaborative work, he has developed a strong body of independent animated films. His early works include The Hunt (2006), The Bridge (2010), and Traces (2010). He later directed and produced the animated short Gottlieb (2018), followed by Zmiulche (2019), which he co-directed, edited, and animated.
His recent film Nebidnina (2024), on which he served as co-director, co-writer, editor, animation director, and animator, premiered internationally at Animakom Festival in Bilbao, where it received the award for Best Innovative Technique. His latest short animated film, Silent Films (2025), premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and has since been selected at over 50 international festivals, winning multiple awards.
Gospodinovski is currently working as animation director on the film Zigolo (directed by Zharko Ivanov), while also developing his new author-driven animated project Diogenes, where he serves as director, screenwriter, and animator.
His work is characterized by a strong authorial voice, blending philosophical inquiry with visual experimentation, and positioning animation as a medium for introspection and poetic storytelling.
